Guru Purnima

Guru Govind dono khade, kake lagu paye.

Balihari Guru aapne, Govind diyo bataye.

Swami Vivekananda once said, “ The Guru only knows what will lead us towards perfection.”

Hello everyone. Today, I am here to share the significance of Guru Purnima and highlight the importance of a guru in our lives.

In Sanskrit, the word ‘guru’ means the one who removes darkness. A guru is not just a teacher but also a guiding light who imparts knowledge, wisdom, values, and morals to their shishyas (students). In India, we dedicate a special day to express our gratitude towards our gurus, which is celebrated as Guru Purnima.

Guru Purnima falls on the full moon day in the month of Ashadha, which usually comes in June or July. On this day, we remember Maharishi Veda Vyas, who compiled the Vedas and is regarded as the author of the Mahabharata and Puranas. Through his work, he shared deep knowledge about God, the self, and the existence of life.

Guru Purnima is a day to celebrate the sacred bond of respect and trust shared between gurus and their disciples. On this day, we thank our teachers for selflessly sharing their knowledge, guiding us, and preparing us to face life with courage.

A life without a true guru is like walking blindfolded on a rocky path, hoping to reach the destination. Our teachers guide us, remove our ignorance, and help us overcome challenges. Just as Krishna guided Arjuna during his toughest moment and helped him choose the path of righteousness, our teachers guide us to make the right decisions in life.

Let me share a beautiful story. Once, Swami Vivekananda was in some financial difficulties. His Guru, Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, advised him to pray to God sincerely. Swami Vivekananda followed his guru’s advice and developed a close connection with God. Experiencing God’s presence became possible for him only because of his guru’s guidance. These inspiring stories assert the role of a great guru in the life of his disciple.

On this auspicious day of Guru Purnima, let us come together to thank our teachers, who have shaped our lives with their love, knowledge, and compassion. May we continue to walk the path they have shown us, with gratitude in our hearts.

Thank you.
